As the year begins, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of fresh starts and new to-do lists. Many of us set ambitious goals: grow the business, improve work-life balance, get fitter, save more.
But before diving into the “what” and “how,” it’s worth pausing to reconnect with something even more important: your “why.”
Your why is the driving force behind what you do. It’s the deeper reason that motivates you to get up each morning, take on challenges, and make meaningful progress, not just in your work, but in your personal life too.
When your goals align with your why, they carry more weight and purpose. Without that alignment, even well-intentioned plans can start to feel empty or overwhelming by mid-year.
Why reflection matters
The start of a new year is a natural time to reflect: a moment to look back on what worked, what didn’t, and why certain things mattered more than others. Reflection helps you recognise patterns, celebrate progress, and identify what truly fuels your motivation.
For those of us working in sustainability or small business support, it’s especially important. We spend much of our time helping others achieve their visions, so taking a moment to revisit our own purpose ensures we’re building our year on a foundation of clarity and authenticity.
My approach to setting intentional goals
Every January, I set aside time to reflect and plan; not just for my business, but for my life as a whole. My approach is simple and intentional:
Fix three personal goals – These are for you and your well-being. They might include habits that bring you joy, time for self-care, or something that strengthens your relationship if you’re in one. These goals are about nurturing who you are beyond work.
Fix three professional goals – These focus on where you want your work or business to grow. It could be streamlining a process, deepening client relationships, learning a new skill, or expanding into new areas. The key is to choose goals that align with your why — not just what’s trending or expected.
Keep it realistic and balanced – Six goals in total might not sound like much, but that’s the point. Clarity beats quantity. Each goal has space to breathe, and you have the mental capacity to give it genuine attention.
A simple reflection exercise
As you plan your year, try this short reflection exercise:
What moments from last year felt most fulfilling and why?
What drained your energy and what might you let go of?
How can you use your strengths to create more of what matters this year?
Write your answers down, then shape your goals around the patterns that emerge. You’ll likely find that when your goals grow out of your values, they feel less like resolutions and more like a natural next step.
Starting the year grounded in purpose
There’s something powerful about beginning the year grounded in your why. It keeps you centred when things get busy, helps you prioritise what truly matters, and reminds you that progress isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about moving forward in a way that feels aligned, intentional, and fulfilling.
So before you dive into action this January, take a breath.
Reflect.
Reconnect with your purpose.
Then fix your goals with intention; three personal, three professional; and step confidently into the year ahead.
